Petition: End the War on Yemen Now

We call upon the governments of Europe, trade unions, human rights organisations to take immediate action to stop the appalling suffering and destruction in Yemen, which is primarily being caused by the violence of the Arab coalition, which includes the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. UAE has been bombing Yemen extensively lately with no media coverage to highlight its war crimes.

The UAE is a country with a gleaming façade. It is a top tourist destination: family-orientated, clean, hot and opulent. But behind the glamour is a dismal and worsening human rights record, and not far away, in Yemen, a humanitarian crisis is unfolding. The UAE is part of the Saudi-led, western-backed assault on Yemeni civilians.

In the UAE, human rights violations abound, with ‘disappearances’ of people expressing any dissent. Human Rights Watch says the Emirati government has an “intolerance of criticism” which has led to a society closed off from democracy and debate by way of torture, repression, political persecution, unfair trials and denial of workers’ rights, particularly migrant workers.

And while western democracies have long turned a blind eye to the human rights abuses of the UAE, they are actively backing the onslaught against the Yemen.

Over 15,000 civilians have been killed in Yemen since the Saudi-led proxy war against Iran began in 2015. The UAE is a key player in the military coalition against the Houthis which has been shown to indiscriminately target Yemeni civilians, and is suspected to be a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

The assault on Yemen, the region’s poorest country, by the region’s richest countries, has left the country on the verge of a “famine of Biblical proportions”.

The fasted spread of cholera in modern history, affecting one million Yemenis is another effect of the war. With seven million people on the brink of starvation, Yemen is blockaded and essential supplies, including medical supplies, cannot reach civilians.

The crimes in Yemen require an unprecedented response from western governments:

  • Pressure the UN Security Council to intervene and stop the War.
  • Drop food aid to the affected Yemeni Civilians.
  • Ban arms sales to the UAE and the Arab Coalition.
  • Open War Crimes investigation on UAE aerial and land bombings.
  • Open investigation on Enforced disappearances and UAE’s run [prions south of Yemen.

We invite the public as well as NGOs and trade unions to join our petition to save more human lives in Yemen.
